We ran out of food again, but we can still eat!

Thank God for the Bluego banana trees in our yard. These things are awesome. Before they are ripe they are like potato. After they ripen to a yellow and just start to get black spots they are sooo sweet. Much different than a regular banana.
Like I mentioned earlier, we ran out of food. So, at that point we did what any rational person would do. We went in the yard and started looking in the usual places. No cocoa nuts, no mango yet, none of my crops are ready. Hey, I see a bunch of bluego banana!
We have used these many ways aside from eating them ripe. (which is rare)
We usually get them green and fry them in some way. Awesome chips, french fries, with the right spice combo - veggie burgers and tater tots. They also boil nice. We use them in soups too. I have not tried mashed potato yet (I dont think it is the right texture), but it might be good.

Here is what we did last night. French Fries! I love them.
You can see to the far right the fresh, raw bluego  To the left of that you see them peeled. In the big bowl they are cut into strips. In the little pan they are deep frying. On the news paper they are done and only half make it to the plate. We eat them as they come out. ;)
Well, french fries are good but not a meal. So we made the burgers to go with.

Again, (the same with all pictures on this page) click it to make it bigger.
Here are the burgers made from the same thing as the french fries. We put lots of spice in it and with a little imagination, we can pretend we have meat. We are not vegetarian but we dont eat that much meat anymore due to the price. Chicken is about $4 per pound or more and beef/pork is at least $5 per pound. Not too much but also I have never found chicken/beef/pork in my yard that is mine to eat. ;)

I know this isnt actually a free dinner. The price of a pan, news paper and oil would be what we paid. We had all of that already, so I am calling it a free meal. It was good and more importantly - filling.

What do you think of our dinner? We liked it but sometimes worry about nutrition. Just like in the USA, a good diet cost more here. We normally eat rice and some kind of bean. Sometimes with that we have veggies. Its not often but we also some times get our half of a chicken for 5 dollars and make a feast with all of the food from the yard. We lack fruit in our diet. Strange for living in a tropical rain forest  but that's how it goes. Our sights are set on this up coming rainy season. Then we will be getting lots of fruit and for free or cheep. Right now we can get 5 big cucumbers for $1. So, as you can imagine we will be eating a lot of those for the next few days.
How does this compare to your diet? Its probably not the same. If it is then lets talk. I would love to hear some more ideas of how to eat for free or cheap.
